Preparation is Key
Big things in business don’t just happen. You have to actually make a plan and then follow through with it. While I learned that the hard way, you don’t have to. I’ve gone ahead of you and I can tell you what to avoid and what to do instead.
Here’s how I prepare for interactions with my audience:
- Prepare my questions ahead of time
- Have 3-5 points that I want to make
- Stay on topic
- Capture them with a great title
I remember this one time that I made the mistake of not having information ready. I came across an influencer and completely missed out on the opportunity!
Since that day, I have kept three questions in mind as I consider the people that I meet or come across whether as scheduled or at random. If you are able to talk with an influencer, then you want to be prepared. This is absolutely essential and the key to your success.
How Bob Proctor Changed My World
I was preparing a topic for a speaking engagement one night. All of the sudden, Bob Proctor was in front of me and heading my way. Determined to ask him a question, I passed by and asked, in reference to speaking to others, “What do you to stay in your zone?”. His answer was a game changer for me and life-altering in my approach to business. You ready? He said, “I just look them in the eyes.” YES.
Right then, I decided that when I have an audience in front of me, I should be looking people in their eyes. I have to do everything I can to connect with them so that my message will be more powerful.
Rather than making your presentation be about you, try to remember that you need it to connect with your audience. Ask yourself these questions as you prepare for speaking engagements:
- What keeps my audience up at night?
- What is their greatest fear?
- How can I solve their problem?
- What do they need most out of me?
If you want to truly connect with the people you are speaking to you, you must address their pain points. Otherwise, they will not see the value in what you are trying to offer them. If you spend all of your time talking about how amazing you are or how much you’ve done, they are going to check out real quick.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t use the art of storying, but make sure you wrap up every story with an actionable point of how they can make a change.
Art from the Heart
One of the things that I coach others on is that the best work we do in business is work that comes from our heart. I call this “art from the heart” in my work and believe it is the way to truly connect with others.
The product you sell is secondary. In other words, people want people and that means to communicate and make it be sincere and from your heart. Your brand will receive more engagement and you’ll be able to build and grow because of this genuine desire to help others that shows through in your unstoppable business approach.
Be Ready To Deliver Your Message
What I learned from Bob Proctor changed my thought process and business. My goal is to be prepared and to stay in the zone by focusing on my audience. It doesn’t matter what you are selling. You need to know and connect with your audience. The primary goal and mindset should be about them instead of how you are delivering the message.
Give your best information, but don’t throw it at them in a way that it’s all about you. Tweak your words to be sure you bring in how it helps them. Your connection will improve by looking at them in the eyes and seeking to give them your absolute best.
