Many of us women were taught early on growing up in life that arguing or speaking your voice isn’t “polite or lady like, and to let the men do the talking.” Let me tell you something, I didn’t take so well to that lesson when I was growing up…did you?
There’s a new era for our girls. They don’t have to keep their mouths shut or pretend they aren’t smart. Not only do they have a voice, they are able to use it.
This is why teaching Hanalei how to speak her voice with clarity, and to articulate her point backed by facts is one of my biggest Unstoppable Momma missions in life.
I Decided To Use My Voice With Power
I will never forget the moment I made a decision that I would use my voice with power, to be respected and to be heard for my knowledge, not by volume. It was in my tenth-grade history class.
There was a girl, whose name I’ve forgotten. She stood up before a largely skeptical suburbia, Michigan classroom and made an impassioned case for the Equal Rights Amendment.
Her voice shook with power as she argued that “Women should have rights equal to those of men.” It was the first time I’d ever heard a girl my age stick up for the value of other women.
But more than that, it was the first time I’d ever seen someone stick her neck out for an issue she cared about, so passionately that she was willing to stand up in front of a classroom and speak her truth so deeply without the fear of what others thought or believed.
I Remember Looking at Her and Thinking…
“That girl has guts, and I want some.”
For this moment, I started using my voice and speaking my mind and am now dedicated to my daughter and women around the world to speak their voice and be heard!
But did you know the U.S. Constitution does not guarantee equal rights for women or men for that matter?
Since 1923, activists have been trying to pass the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which states, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
How can a country that prides itself on being a democratic leader of the world refuse to protect women and men equally under the law?
You Are Not Alone In Believing The ERA Passed
Don’t worry, while it’s not necessarily comforting, it turns out that you’re not alone in assuming equal rights. According to the Equal Rights Coalition, 96% of Americans think the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) has passed!
The movement started in 1921 but didn’t go very far. There was another huge push for equality in 1971. The U.S. House of Representatives submitted the ERA to state legislatures for ratification. The bill did not pass, and will require ratification from 38 states in order for that to happen.
Why Women Are Still In The Minority
No wonder why 60% of the worlds undergraduate and graduate degrees are held by women while at the same time, women make up the majority of the poor in America. They aren’t being given the equal rights they deserve. They still will not make the same amount of money that a man does for doing the same job.
Many women are left to raise kids on their own while providing for them financially. Other women are committed to staying home with their kids and are left without a way to make money.
This is why I am so passionate about teaching my girl and woman around the world to STAND UP, learn how to use their voice and MAKE THEIR OWN MONEY!
Hanalei Is Already Making Her Own Money
I’ve encouraged Hanalei to decide what she wants to be now. In this digital economy, there is no reason that our kids shouldn’t be able to make their own money. I want her to be responsible for her financial success.
Hanalei launched her clothing line this past year and it has been so successful. While I’ve been giving her guidance, she’s made her own decisions about which direction to take her brand. She is only 11, but already using her voice to make an impact on others.
Women Can Earn Big and Raise Their Children
I don’t believe for half a minute that women are incapable of earning a corporate level salary without putting their children in childcare. If a mom or dad wants to be home with their children, they can do it without sacrificing everything.
I know this to be true because I did it. I walked away from my corporate position to be there for Hanalei. I vowed to never put her in childcare, and I never did.
Maybe that’s not your dream. But, maybe you want to travel the world, stop being a slave to your 9-5, or spend more time on the things you love.
